John Smoltz Heads Back to the ‘Pen for Braves

Written by Chris on June 2nd, 2008 | 0 Comments

When you talk about John Smoltz it’s hard not to think about whether or not he’s one of the most unfortunate souls in baseball. His talent over the years is undeniable — John Smoltz is an excellent pitcher. When the great pitchers of this generation are talked about, though, how often do you hear Smoltz’s name among Clemens (steroids notwithstanding), Pettitte (ditto), Santana, and Rivera? Overshadowed by these names, Smoltz has been for the Braves both a dominant starter and a strong force from the bullpen, but this last stint beyond the outfield fence might be his last.

Things That Need To Be Addressed: Baseball

Written by paul on May 20th, 2008 | 1 Comment

Bud Selig is the worst commissioner there has ever been, in any sport. He is an absolute boob. I understand the fact that he is basically an owners puppet but some of the things that have happened under his watch make me so angry that they let this moron ruin the game that was pretty much untouchable. The Great American Pastime. But he managed to screw it up. Here are some that make my blood boil:

Eric Gagne Can Close His Suitcase, Please!

A closer has to have a single mindset; I will get you out! I am the man! How dare you step in the same stadium as me! You have no business here!

Barry Bonds: Maybe It’s Not Collusion

Written by chris on May 8th, 2008 | 2 Comments

The MLB Players Union is looking into possible collusion amongst the owners in how Barry Bonds’ free agency has played out. The issues stems from the fact that there are teams that on paper could use his service yet he hasn’t received a single offer form any of the MLB teams.

The Calm Before the Ryan Express

Written by paul on April 29th, 2008 | 0 Comments

In my continuing efforts to keep the world abreast of the status of the sinking ship that is the Texas Rangers. Listening to the radio today an article by Buster Olney of ESPN was read concerning the Rangers. It sounded a lot like the chorus of us that are ready for some change in the right direction. I have to agree. I am so desperate to see some improvement I would back even the most aggressive moves, even trading Michael Young. He is a good player that is getting paid well, if we can get some hope for the future I am all for it. Washington has to go and possibly John Daniels. To read an article from a nation baseball expert (I think the ESPN baseball guys are some of the best in the country) saying the team is out of control, whether it is because of him or not a change must be made. The pendulum has swung from micro-manager Buck to lackadaisical, player’s manager Ron Washington. Is there not a manager that could right this ship or do we need to mothball it and start over? Either way, Nolan Ryan has a huge task ahead of him. I don’t think he has walked away from many challenges and I don’t think he was on the losing end that often either. I am optimistic after going to the game this weekend, as always, it was fun. The kids had fun and so did I. A few bags over heads but not too many yet. To sum it up, the Rangers win on Sunday tied them for last in the MLB with Washington, any coincidence?

Tough Road Ahead For Girardi

Written by Jeff on April 20th, 2008 | 0 Comments

I don’t envy Joe Girardi. He’s in a tough spot - one of the most closely scrutinized manager positions in all of baseball. He’s been given a team with a huge payroll and huge expectations to win. Unfortunately, he’s also been given the task of helping the rebuilding process, bringing young talent along while simultaneously competing for a division title and hopefully a World Series win.

For Every Red Sox or Yankee, There Is a Texas Ranger

Written by paul on April 16th, 2008 | 0 Comments

As you go through story after story of how the Red Sox are full of greatness and the Yankees will once again be the beast that they always are, please light a candle in hopes that those teams that are being pounded by the Sox and Yanks will have a prayer someday. Please understand that the fan of a team that absolutely stinks, has it’s way of being a badge of honor. Living though the tough times makes the good times so much better. I know that the Spankees and Red Sox had a stretch of awful baseball but they have seen the promised land.

Big Papi Curse Lifted?

Written by Jeff on April 14th, 2008 | 0 Comments

Earlier this week the Yankees dug up the mysterious shirt that was buried in the cement at the new Yankee stadium. It turned out to be a David Ortiz t-shirt. Big Papi, who has been slumping horribly, was given yesterday off and returned to the lineup tonight. This was his first game since the article of clothing bearing his name was dug out of Yankee stadium.
