Re-Scorning Chicago’s Scorned Son

Written by Chris Roberts on June 3rd, 2008 | 0 Comments

Steve Bartman is already hated by the Cubs’ faithful. Moises Alou wants to stoke the fire and renew the hate. Poor, poor Steve Bartman.

Now, I have to admit: if someone spoiled the Red Sox’ 2004 postseason like this, I’d want him or her run out of town, too. That aside, I’ve always had a soft spot for Bartman — he’s a Cubs fan who was just a little too enthusiastic. You think he did that on purpose?

For a little while, too, Alou was quoted as saying he didn’t have a chance at catching that ball anyway. While that only settled fans at Wrigley a little bit, it still diverted the entirety of the angst away from Steve.

Now, though, Alou reverts back to his original claim, that Bartman did ruin the catch for him, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Once again, Moises Alou wants to set the record straight: He swears he would have caught Luis Castillo’s foul ball in the 2003 National League Championship Series if Cubs fan Steve Bartman hadn’t reached over the left-field railing and gotten in his way.

“I had it,” Alou said Wednesday in the Mets’ clubhouse. “I make that catch, (the playoffs would have been a) different story.”

Extracted from the context, Alou seems to be throwing poor Steve under the bus, but Alou has always maintained, regardless of what story he allegedly relates, that fans should forgive Bartman and move on.

How does ripping off the scab help that, though, Moises?
