For Every Red Sox or Yankee, There Is a Texas Ranger
Written by Paul Barton on April 16th, 2008 | 0 CommentsAs you go through story after story of how the Red Sox are full of greatness and the Yankees will once again be the beast that they always are, please light a candle in hopes that those teams that are being pounded by the Sox and Yanks will have a prayer someday. Please understand that the fan of a team that absolutely stinks, has it’s way of being a badge of honor. Living though the tough times makes the good times so much better. I know that the Spankees and Red Sox had a stretch of awful baseball but they have seen the promised land.
The Texas Rangers are (at this point) the worst baseball team I have ever seen. They can’t hit, pitch, catch, throw, or run the bases. After decades of bad baseball, to hear the local sports guys say that they cannot believe how bad this team is playing, is a statement within itself. If it was bad then, and worse now, OY!! What the heck do we have to root for?
I will go to games, with free tickets. I will park in the Six Flags parking lot which I have already paid for. I will bring my own food. Until this ship gets righted I will not pay to go to a game. I am going to have to spend time explaining to my 3 year old son that stopping at third with a runner behind you and the 3rd base coach windmilling you around from 1st is not good. That the fact that the runner behind you got caught by the throw to second because he saw the sign to keep running and almost ran into the guy that stopped at third is bad.
The links below are to podcasts from The Ticket 1310am here in Dallas. You can possibly hear the anguish in their voices. I truly want the Rangers, not to win it all (now), but to just be a good team. I will go see a team that is fundamentally sound, can run the bases, hits pretty well, and can pitch well enough to stay in the game. But to sit through thus, is almost asking too much. Going to a game thinking that you will probably lose is not fun, it has become a reality around here though. That glimmer of hope, that spark of belief that your boys can get it done is what makes baseball (or any sport) great. If all is lost before you start, what do you have?
Don’t get me wrong, I know the old sayings “anybody can beat anybody on any given day” and “that’s why they play the games”. I believe that it will get turned around again, the Rangers are in a position that is difficult to manage, do we try and win now, how do we get fans in the seats, do we bring up new guys and grow, all very good questions. I think they have been focusing on those questions so much that they forgot that you have to play the game the way it was meant to be played, fundamentals, baserunning, fielding, pitching, and timely hitting. Stop worrying about the future and focus on the 3rd base coach, the grounder heading toward the gap, the 3-2 pitch and give us a little hope. The contending teams have their moments, but they are just that, moments. This is becoming a trend and from my perspective, will not be tolerated. If it means getting rid of the Manager or the GM or both, I am good with that.
