Barry Bonds to Play in New York? With the Mets? Really?

And his agent isn’t agressively p’shaw-ing offers that don’t include the words “designated” and “hitter” why?

From Newsday:

Barry Bonds in a Mets uniform? As the team considers its options for leftfield after losing Moises Alou to hernia surgery, the idea of bringing the controversial home run king to Shea Stadium is one that definitely intrigues the front office. Despite all the negatives associated with Bonds, and there are many, the boost to this lineup would be immeasurable. It’s just that the Mets simply aren’t that desperate - yet.

General manager Omar Minaya, in talking about the impact of Alou’s surgery Thursday, cracked a wry smile when asked about Bonds and said he will look at his “internal” options to fill that void.

At this point, with Alou expected back by late April or early May, the Mets can afford to wait and see how he recovers from this latest health issue. But if Alou, 41, is forced to miss any significant time, or Carlos Delgado’s hip condition deteriorates rapidly, or the Mets lose another of their major offensive weapons, Minaya might have no choice other than to explore the Bonds gambit.

As one Met said yesterday: “Why not bring in a talent like that? We’d win.”

First, I feel compelled to tell you that I feel way too young to be audience to a situation where Moises Alou’s hernia surgery is paving the way for Barry Bonds to wear blue and orange.

That aside, this raises red flags for all of you, too, right? How is Barry Bonds in a Mets’ uniform good for anyone involved?

For the Mets, you get a sluggish outfielder and an above average bat heading quickly into its decline. Though, when pitted against Moises Alou, I’d imagine the line is a push between them.

For Bonds — and on the grander scale, the whole MLB — what benefit does he gain in moving into a larger media market and a much more demanding fan base? On top of that, especially considering New York’s media standing compared to the Bay Area, who wants their dirty laundry being aired in a bigger crowd? Moving to New York means even more visibility to his cause célèbre if you can believe it.

So, what say you? Anybody willing to disagree with me here? Is there any argument for a Bonds move to Shea?
