Rockies Continue to Do the Right Thing
Written by Paul Barton on March 5th, 2008 | 1 CommentHave they got it figured out? Is there a magic solution to putting together a winner? I don’t know but you can’t say they aren’t trying. Unlike their hockey counterparts, the Colorado Rockies are doing their best to hold on to some of that mojo they had last year. I couldn’t believe the run they went on last year, it was amazing. Baseball has been my true love since I was big enough to call balls and strikes from my Dad’s lap. What they did last year was a look back at the way it used to be. Homegrown, young talent with some key additions creating a mixture that would make most chemist very happy. They performed and are now being rewarded. As noted on this ESPN article, they have resigned the 4th young key ingredient to a new deal.
Here in North Texas, we have quite a conundrum. Our young GM, John Daniels, was formerly in the Rockies organization and is trying to instill that model here. The real problem is that we have been suffering from terrible baseball so long we can’t remember what good baseball is, for that matter, what good baseball sense is. Overpaying and underperforming, trading away the future to win now, getting people in the seats seems to be the focus of this organization. And if they would listen, the fans are saying, look, we go to the games, we buy the stuff, you run out the same old stuff in new paint and different names and we are getting tired of it. PLEASE show us some progress, PLEASE!!! Win something, ANYTHING!!!! A wild card would be nice. Over .500, I’ll buy in after that.
The Rockies are reaping the rewards of their system and good for them. They stood pat, brought up their talent, and made the best of it. Oh, and how do you think they can afford to resign these guys to big contracts? By getting people in the seats, and how did they do that? By using something that most organizations really don’t take into consideration when working on budgets and payroll and ticket prices and merchandising. That would be WINNING!!

The Avalanche had no mojo last year, but this year you’re seeing them try to capture the mojo of the ‘96 and ‘01 season. A desperate move to sign Foote and Forsberg? Maybe. But it’s a move that will certainly create a buzz and give them a MUCH better chance than last year.
